Custom Stainless Steel 17-4 PH Flange Machining with 100% CMM Inspection

In the aerospace manufacturing field, precision is not merely a requirement, but a safety standard. Recently, our team successfully delivered a batch of high-precision 17-4PH (AISI 630) stainless steel flanges for the aerospace industry. This project perfectly demonstrates our precision CNC machining capabilities in handling stringent geometric tolerances and complex materials.

Challenge: Stress and Tight Geometric Tolerances

The technical drawings for these aerospace flanges specified extremely stringent geometric dimensions and tolerances (GD&T):

  • Flatness requirement: within 0.01 mm;
  • Parallelism requirement: within 0.02 mm.

Difficulty: 17-4PH stainless steel is a high-strength precipitation-hardening stainless steel. During high-strength CNC milling and turning, the material inevitably accumulates internal residual stress. If not handled properly, the release of these internal stresses after machining can lead to material deformation, making it impossible to achieve the 0.01 mm flatness tolerance.

Our Solution: Stress relief and controlled grinding.

To overcome material deformation and thermal expansion, our engineering team implemented a meticulous multi-step process:

  • Strategic Stress Relief: Instead of machining the part all at once, we first perform rough machining, then allow the blank to rest for a period (natural aging/stress relief). This allows for the complete release of internal residual stress before final finishing.
  • Precision Surface Grinding: We use high-precision surface grinders to achieve exceptional flatness and parallelism.
  • Thermal Deformation Control: To prevent deformation of the stainless steel due to localized frictional heat, we deliberately reduce the grinder feed rate and wheel speed while ensuring continuous coolant flow. This minimizes thermal stress and ensures a mirror-like, ultra-smooth surface

Quality Assurance: 100% Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM) Inspection.

For aerospace components, documentation and traceability are just as important as the machining itself.

  • 100% Dimensional Inspection: Every flange undergoes comprehensive dimensional inspection in our temperature-controlled quality laboratory.
  • Dimensional and Tolerancing (GD&T) Verification: We use a Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM) for 100% CMM inspection, focusing on critical flatness and parallelism indicators.

Result: Delivered flanges are 100% fully compliant with stringent specifications. We provide customers with comprehensive inspection reports and Material Test Reports (MTR) with the shipment.
