As the preferred method for rapid prototyping, 3D printing has transformed the way we manufacture parts. While it’s a quick and easy way to produce prototype parts, achieving a perfect surface is challenging. At CS Molding, we work with customers around the world, helping them solve a variety of problems while producing 3D-printed parts. Let’s take a look at the most common surface issues and simple solutions.
I.Layer Lines: Visible Marks
Layer lines are the most common problem. You can see marks where each layer of material meets. This happens because the 3D printer prints the part one layer at a time.
① Causes of this phenomenon:
Printing speed too high
Layer height set too high
Poor layer alignment
②CS Molding’s Solution:
We first adjust the layer height. For parts requiring a smooth surface, we use layer heights as thin as 0.1mm. Our team also reduces the print speed for the outer layers. After printing, we use a light sanding or sandblasting process to make the lines less noticeable. Many customers are surprised by how this simple step improves their parts.
II.Stringing: Fine plastic strands
Stringing looks like spiderwebs between parts or on surfaces. It occurs when the printer nozzle leaks small amounts of plastic as it moves.
① Causes:
Nozzle overheating
Ineffective retraction settings
The distance between parts is too small
② How CS Molding solves this problem:
Our experts adjust the retraction settings—this means pulling the plastic back toward the nozzle during movement. We also slightly lower the nozzle temperature. For customers producing multiple parts at a time, we adjust the spacing between parts appropriately. These subtle adjustments can almost completely eliminate stringing.
III.Warping: Part Curling
Warping refers to the lifting or curling of the edges of a part, especially when using materials like ABS. This can affect the part’s shape.
① Causes:
Cold air coming into contact with hot plastic
Uneven print bed temperature
Poor print bed adhesion
② How CS Molding solves this problem:
We use a heated bed set to the appropriate temperature for each material. Our printers also have an enclosed chamber to keep the air warm. For tricky parts, we add a small rim around the base to help it adhere better. These measures have helped our customers reduce warping by over 90%.
IV.Porosity: Tiny holes in the surface
Sometimes you may see small holes or bubbles in the printed surface. This is called porosity, and it weakens the part.
① Causes:
Moisture in the printing material
Insufficient pressure during printing
Poor-quality filaments or powder
②How CS Molding solves this problem:
We dry all materials before use, especially nylon and ABS, which absorb moisture easily. Our printers are calibrated to apply the appropriate pressure to ensure a secure bond between each layer. We only use high-quality materials from trusted suppliers. This attention to detail means our customers receive stronger, smoother parts.
V.Burst: Unsmooth corners
Burst often occurs at corners or where the printer turns. They can make the part feel unfinished.
① Cause:
Sudden changes in print speed
Nozzle not cleaned
Incorrect corner speed settings
②How CS Molding solves this problem:
Our software adjusts the speed when approaching corners, slightly reducing it for cleaner turns. We regularly clean our nozzles to prevent plastic buildup. For parts requiring extra smoothness, we offer post-processing techniques like tumbling or steam smoothing. A customer recently told us that their products look more “professional” after applying these techniques.
